How to Properly Treat Pink Eye

How to Properly Treat Pink Eye

Pick eye, also known as conjunctivitis, happens to most people at some point. Treatment depends on the type of pink eye, and except in a few cases, the condition is usually simple to deal with. Epic Vision Eye Centers in Kansa and Missouri can help.

All the Different Types of Pink Eye

There are four different types of pink eye: bacterial, viral, irritant, and allergic.

Bacterial pink eye requires antibiotics to treat correctly. Take the whole course of antibiotics (these are usually eye drops), throw out any eye makeup or contacts that you've used, wash your pillowcases daily (or at least change them daily), and do not touch your eyes. Wash your hands with soap and water if you accidentally do touch them. Symptoms should start to get better within a day or so of starting antibiotics.

Then there's viral pink eye, which usually happens when you've had a cold and the germs have reached one or both of your eyes. There's not much you can do about viral conjunctivitis that stems from a cold. Take the same measures to keep clean that you would for bacterial conjunctivitis. Sometimes antihistamines and ibuprofen can help with symptoms. Symptoms can last two to three weeks. See your optometrist if they last longer than that.

Sometimes viral conjunctivitis is caused by a disease like herpes. This requires professional intervention because it can lead to scarring on your cornea.

Irritant conjunctivitis happens when something gets in your eye. If you've ever had a drop of soap land in your eye while showering that led to redness, itching, or discharge, you've had a form of this. Contact lenses, air pollution, and other irritants can cause this, too. Gently flush the eye with water and see your optometrist if your conjunctivitis persists.

Allergic conjunctivitis is likely the most frustrating because it can recur a lot. Antihistamines and other allergy meds are all the treatment you need. Also do what you can to exclude the allergen from your life. Vacuum, wash pillow cases (it really helps to have several pillowcases on hand), use air filters, and so on.
