Fruits & Veggies and How They Impact Vision: More Matters Month

Your diet and the fruits and veggies you eat impacts your health. This is a known fact. The old wives' tale that carrots will make you see better has been proven to be more fact than fiction. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that are good for your eyes and your vision. Knowing which ones to eat and how much to eat is something everyone can benefit from. At Epic Vision Eye Center, we care about eye health and we offer the residents of Kansas and Missouri the benefit of our optometry knowledge.

Fruits and Veggies That Help Vision

Berries and citrus fruits

Berries and citrus fruits contain Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been shown to improve the health of capillaries, of which the eye has it fair share. Several studies have shown Vitamin C can help decrease the risk of cataracts. Another study showed age-related macular degeneration could be slowed by about 25 percent in people who intake optimal levels of Vitamin C. So, enjoy your raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit and help your eyes to stay healthy. About one cup of strawberries or one medium orange gives you 99 percent of your daily dose of recommended Vitamin C.

Leafy greens

Leafy greens contain lutein and zeaxanthin as well as Vitamin C, E, and A. All of these have been shown to help lower the risk of chronic eye disease.

Carrots

Carrots are a good source of beta-carotene. While eating carrots won't suddenly allow you to see better, your eyes will thank you for giving them this important nutrient. In the same study that recommended Vitamin C for age-related macular degeneration, beta carotene was also cited as an antioxidant that could provide benefits to eye health.

Eye health depends on eating correctly, and getting plenty of fruits and veggies is proven to benefit your eyes. At Epic Vision Eye Center, the health of your eyes is our top priority. If you are in Kansas or Missouri, we look forward to serving you at our optometry office. Call us at 888-749-7755 to make an appointment.
