Dry Eye Tips for the Winter

Tips for Preventing Dry Eye This Winter

As winter weather approaches, the risk of dry eyes goes up dramatically. As the outdoor temperature drops, so does the humidity. Plus, cold winds can irritate and dry your eyes. Indoor heating, which also reduces the humidity, can lead to dry eye. If you have eyes that are red, itchy, fatigued or watering excessively, you may be experiencing dry eye. At Epic Vision Eye Centers, we have some advice that can help our patients in and around Kansas with winter dry eye.

Protect Your Eyes Outdoors

Sunglasses might be a summer staple, but they are still an important part of your winter wardrobe. Prescription sunglasses, especially in wraparound styles, can protect your eyes from drying winter winds. Sunglasses can also protect against debris and harmful UV rays. Outdoor enthusiasts who are looking forward to winter sports need to consider a pair of sports goggles, which won’t slip off during activities.

Protect Your Eyes Indoors

Even when you are indoors, snuggled around a fire, dry eyes can be a problem. Indoor heating can cause the humidity level to plummet. To protect your eyes, do not sit near radiators, fireplaces, or heat outlets. A humidifier can help to replace much-needed moisture in the air. It is also a good idea to take frequent breaks from looking at your phone or computer screens, and use eye drops as needed.

Opt for Glasses

For many, contact lenses are the go-to choice for corrective lenses. However, contacts can contribute to dry eyes, especially in the winter. This season, swap between glasses and contacts every other day. Don’t let fashion woes stop you from wearing glasses. If you don’t have a pair of frames to complete your winter outfits, make an appointment with us to check out all of our high-fashion frame options.

Make an Appointment for Optometry Care

Winter weather, and a lack of humidity, often leads to dry eyes. However, dry eyes can also be a symptom of other more serious medical concerns.
