Ortho-K

.

Ortho-K, also known as orthokeratology, are special contact lenses. They are designed to gently shape your cornea to not rely on glasses or contacts to see correctly. Our team at Epic Vision Eye Center in Smithville can prescribe these contacts.

How Do Ortho-K Lenses Work?

Unlike conventional soft contacts that are worn during the day, Ortho-K lenses are worn at night. While you are sleeping, the contacts gently reshape your cornea, correcting your refractive errors. When you wake up in the morning and remove the contacts, you will see clearly all day.

The Benefits of Ortho-K

Anyone that is tired of relying on glasses or contacts can benefit from Ortho-K. Some other factors include:

  • Dry eye syndrome: If you have dry eye syndrome, Ortho-K is an excellent option. Traditional soft lenses absorb the moisture from your eyes during the day, which will make your symptoms worse. Because Ortho-K contacts are worn while you sleep and your eyes are closed, they won't dry your eyes.
  • Poor LASIK candidates: LASIK is a laser surgical procedure that reshapes your cornea, correcting your refractive errors. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. If you have certain conditions of the eye, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy, you would be a poor candidate for LASIK. The same is true if you have an autoimmune condition or take certain medications. If you are not a good candidate for LASIK, Ortho-K is an excellent option.
  • Children: Studies have shown that Ortho-K can slow the progression of myopia in children, preserving their vision.

Replacing Your Ortho-K Contacts

It is recommended that you replace Ortho-K contacts every year or two, depending on the condition of the contacts. If you care for your lenses properly, you should be able to wear them for two years.

How Much Do Ortho-K Lenses Cost?

The cost of Ortho-K includes the initial exam, follow-up fitting appointments, and the contacts. The average cost of Ortho-K is between $900 to over $2,000. The actual cost would depend on what your eye doctor charges. If you cannot afford Ortho-K, Care Credit is an option that allows you to make monthly payments if you qualify.
