Hard to Fit Contacts vs. Regular Contacts Explained by Kansa and Missouri - based Eye Doctor

Contact lenses have revolutionized vision treatment for many people, but there remains one particular group that hasn't seen the full benefit yet: those who are considered "hard to fit." At Epic Vision Eye Centers in Smithville and other locations in Kansas and Missouri, we can help you get something called hard to fit contacts if traditional contacts won't do.

Specialized Attention

All "hard to fit" really means is that you don't have an average or typical eyeball -- and plenty of people don't have average or typical eyeballs. Being "hard to fit" is not unusual at all.

Generally, if you're hard to fit, it means you likely have a condition such as presbyopia (age-related farsightedness), astigmatism (different corneal curvature), keratoconus (a bulging or cone-like cornea) or dry eyes (not enough tears), as well as previous eye surgery or conjunctivitis. You will need specialized lenses for each of these conditions.

A typical contact lens sits right on the eyeball and tends to follow a fairly standard curve. The lens is customized to fit your particular eyeballs, of course, but for traditional lenses, any variations fall within a set range. Deviations outside this range require special lenses. An optometrist can create those lenses for you after an exam.

You'll have a regular eye exam first to see what your current prescription is and which conditions are making you hard to fit. Then, the optometrist will run through your options -- for example, if you have keratoconus, you could try gas-permeable lenses, and if those aren't comfortable, you could try a system called piggybacking, where you have softer lenses placed between your eyeballs and the rigid gas-permeable lenses. It may take some trial and error.
