Floaters

What Are Eye Floaters?

Eye floaters look like small dark spots or strings in your vision. They're made from tiny clumps of fluid or gel that are located in the vitreous of your eye. They're also very common and most of the time they're not any cause for alarm. Almost everyone has a few floaters from time to time. However, there are some times when you should be concerned about them, so you can make sure you're taking the best possible care of your eye health and vision.

What Causes These Floaters?

Floaters are caused by small clumps of matter in your eye. These clumps are typically not harmful, and they appear and disappear seemingly randomly. If your eyes are very tired, you're rubbing them more than usual, or you wear contact lenses, you may see more floaters than other people. Additionally, if you have had an eye injury recently, you might start seeing more eye floaters than usual.

When Should You See an Optometrist?

You may want to see an optometrist if you suddenly have a lot more floaters for no apparent reason. Especially consider seeing an eye doctor if you have flashes of light along with your floaters, any pain in your eye, or are experiencing a loss in vision. These can be signs of retinal detachment or retinal tears, both of which are very serious and could lead to permanent vision loss if they aren't properly treated.
