Diagnosing and Treating Eye Floaters

Your vision can play some interesting tricks on you, even when there’s nothing wrong with your eyes at all. You might think that you see something moving when it’s not, especially toward the end of the night, or you might have double vision for a second before you clear it away by blinking. If you’ve ever seen something that wasn’t there, like a spot or a dangling object, you might be experiencing eye floaters.

Diagnosing and Treating Eye Floaters

In some cases, this is an entirely normal reaction for your body, but in others, you may need a professional to check out what’s really happening beneath the surface. At Epic Vision Eye Centers, with locations in Baldwin City, Bonner Springs, Clay Center, Dodge City, Manhattan, North KC, Parkville, Smithville, and Washington, we can help you understand more about how this condition is both diagnosed and treated.

How Are Eye Floaters Diagnosed?

Eye floaters are caused by a jelly-like substance called vitreous that is concentrated when you’re young but begins to liquify as you get older. To learn more about what’s going on, the doctor will ask a variety of questions about what you’re seeing as well as your (and potentially your family’s) medical history. They’ll typically dilate the pupils so the doctor can better see the vitreous and the retina. Should an optometrist determine that your eye floaters are connected to retina damage, you may also need an ultrasound.

How Are Eye Floaters Treated?

Eye floaters are not necessarily always immediately treated. If there’s no cause for concern, an eye doctor may determine that you’ll only need to check in again should the problem get worse. Should you need treatment, the recommendations will vary based on how far your symptoms have progressed. Whether you need lasers or surgery, though, it’s important to have a general idea of how eye floaters work and what can be done to reduce or eliminate them. While they may start off as little more than minor inconveniences, they can eventually become a threat to your safety, especially if you're noticing them while driving.
