Myopia FAQs

What Is Myopia?

Also known as nearsightedness, myopia refers to a condition that causes objects that are in the distance to appear blurry. If the light that enters your eye focuses in front of the retina rather than on it directly, it can cause this condition to occur. With current treatments, it’s possible to not only manage myopia, but even reduce or eliminate it over time in some clients who respond to certain innovative treatments.

Who Can Get Myopia?

While anyone can have myopia, some folks may be at a higher risk for developing it. If you know that nearsightedness runs in your biological family, you may have a higher chance for developing it than someone without that risk factor. It can also happen to folks who don’t have a family history of myopia, so having regular vision screenings is important for everyone regardless of family background.

What Treatments Are Available for Myopia?

We can several different treatments for this condition. We may recommend multifocal glasses that can help your eyes transition from seeing things that are nearby to those that are far away. If you prefer to wear contacts, we can conduct contact lens exams in order to set you up with contact lenses. Other types of myopia treatment include specialty eye drops for children and innovative myopia management called “orthokeratology” or “ortho-k,” which reshapes the cornea to reduce myopia.
